What I tell job seekers

  1. Aim for the title they just had. Resumes whose title matched the posting had a 10.6x higher interview rate in Jobscan's study of 2.5 million applications.
  2. Apply to 10 to 20 jobs a week, at 15 to 30 minutes each. Aim for a 5% to 10% interview rate. See Plan your search.
  3. Tailor every resume. Tailored resumes had a 5.71% interview rate in Q2 2026, against 3.09% untailored.
  4. Look past LinkedIn. Google job search had a 6.6% interview rate across 1.24 million applications, against 1.95% on LinkedIn. See Where to find jobs.
  5. Ask for referrals early, and keep applying. 40% of referred applicants reach an interview, but cold applicants still fill most jobs.
  6. A person reads the resume. Fast rejections usually come from knockout questions on the form. See how applicant tracking systems actually work.
  7. Plan for 3 to 4 months. If 1 to 2 weeks of steady applying bring nothing, stop and review fit, resume, and how they apply.
